Maintenance Department Tips

  1. Please report potholes, water in your basement issues and other concerns to the Maintenance Department via the Taylor Mill Administration office (see Department Info on the maintenance homepage).
  2. The Taylor Mill Maintenance Department prides itself on quick snow removal.

Please note that is against the law to shovel snow into the street because it creates a road hazard. Shovel snow to the right of your driveway (when facing the street). Otherwise, the snow will get pushed back onto your driveway during plowing.

Residents aren’t allowed to park on the street if our area receives more than 2 inches of snow. However, please consider not parking on the street anytime it snows to make it easier for us to clean the roads.

  3. Practice good stormwater management!

To help prevent street flooding and keep stormwater out of your home, keep your ditch lines clean and your culvert pipes clear from debris. Property owners are responsible for the upkeep of systems that convey storm water on their property.

In addition, Kenton County Public Works offers a free appliance and $5/tire pickup (up to 4 tires only) service by appointment on Mondays and Fridays only for Kenton County residents only. For more information or to schedule the pickup, call Kenton County Public Works at (859)-392-1920 or visit the Kenton County website.

Sanitation District No. 1 Backup Assistance Program

The Sanitation District No. 2 of Northern Kentucky (SD1) recently implemented its new Backup Assistant Program, offering financial assistance to help property owners in preventing sewer backups caused by wet-weather and increases in rain. Approved at the SD1 Board of Directors meeting, the program opened to customers on May 1, 2017.

The Backup Assistance Program provides up to $5,000.00 per eligible property to help pay for the installation of a backflow valve or special pump within a property owner's plumbing system. These mechanical devices prevent backups by separating a building's private plumbing from the public sewer system during rain events.

SD1 created the program in efforts to alleviate the burdensome costs of repairs for property owners, making it easier for owners to take action in protecting their homes against sewer backups.

Wet-weather sewer backups typically occur when an increase in rain falls in a short period of time, exceeding the sewer system's level of service.

The $5,000.00 per-property maximum reflects only the cost of the valve or pump installation in a typical house, and does not cover any costs for work to upgrade plumbing or electrical systems to current standards. Total program funding in SD1's Fiscal Year 2018, which begins July 1, 2017, will be capped at $300,000.00.

For more information regarding the Backup Assistance Program, please contact SD1 at (859) 581-7450 or www.sd1.org/seweremergency.

Be Winter Ready - Tips for Buying and Applying De-Icer from SD1:

Snow and ice removal is an annual winter chore. As snow piles up, the first line of defense is simply to shovel paved areas to keep them clean and prevent ice from forming. When ice does form, it is common to use salt and other types of chemical de-icers to clear walkways and driveways. Salt and other chemical de-icers help make travel conditions less hazardous, but they can have an impact on local waterways, landscaping, pets and wildlife.

Tips for buying:

Traditional rock salt and some chemical de-icers can injure a pet's paws, damage cars, prematurely age cement and asphalt and pollute streams. There are some alternative de-icers that have less of an impact, but are just as effective at melting ice from paved walkways and driveways.

  • Look for alternative de-icers like calcium chloride and calcium magnesium acetate.
  • Try using de-icers that contain alternative ingredients, such as beet juice.
  • Avoid using de-icers that contain urea.

Tips for applying:

  • Before applying de-cer, make sure to manually remove as much snow and ice as possible. De-icer works best when it is applied to thin layers of ice.
  • Follow the directions on the de-icer container. Using more than what is recommended will not make the ice melt faster. When snow and ice melt, the runoff picks up the excess de-icer and carries it to our streams.
  • When possible, avoid using salt and other de-icers near trees, shrubs and grasses. The salty water can severely harm or kill a home's landscaping.
